End of the Month Summary – August 2017

I pulled out a slight gain in August. The Dow only gained 0.26% and the S&P 500 only edged up 0.05%. I took some risk off as my August options expired and haven’t replaced everything yet. I missed a good opportunity after the short-lived scare from North Korea’s missile launch over Japan and now don’t feel overly bullish enough to take a big risk. I need to sell some out of the money puts at a minimum to keep some …

Options Expiration – August 2018

My four QQQ August $133 naked puts were the only August option contracts I had remaining by today’s expiration. They’ll expire worthless and I’ll have a realized gain of $805.54, but that doesn’t include the loss I took on the long puts I bought as part of the original QQQ ratio spread. The long puts that I closed a few weeks ago gave me a realized loss of $704.51, so my net gain is $101.03.

$101 is hardly …

End of the Month Summary – June 2017

I eked out another small gain this past month. June wasn’t a stellar month for the S&P 500, but it gained 0.48%, which is good after the gains of the first five months. I finally got closer to being fully invested and have some decent gains I could make by the end of July and August. That potential could be spoiled by ADI or could be improved upon by my QQQ ratio spread. At least I’m fully engaged again and …

End of the Month Summary – May 2017

I pulled out another small gain in May and the broken record continues as I lament being under-invested still. On a positive note, I finally filed for divorce last month and it’ll be final in two weeks from today. I’ve held back on some of my personal investing as I’ve been distracted with filing paperwork, but it’ll be over soon and I plan to be able to refocus. While I still believe we should get a correction this summer, I’m …

End of the Month Summary – April 2017

My account had another month of gains, but I was still far under-invested and missed out on what could’ve been more. Maybe I’ll get off the sidelines a little more on the next dip. I missed a good opportunity while the VIX moved higher a couple of weeks ago, but keep waiting for a bigger drop.

I ended April with a Net Liquidation Value (NLV) of $100,970.02 and a Net Asset Value (NAV) of $100,996.36 according to Interactive Brokers (IB) after finishing March with …

End of the Month Summary – March 2017

My account gained a little more in March, but I took it easy overall due to other events in my life. My soon-to-be ex-wife and I sorted out everything and engaged an attorney to write it up for us. Now, we’re in the proofing stage and will file soon, which will open up more investing time for me. I also just got back from a week in Cuba with friends on Saturday. I highly recommend going if you can handle …

End of the Month Summary – February 2017

The good news from February was that my new account is officially funded. The bad news is that I didn’t invest enough yet while the market continued to melt higher. I gained some, but not much at all. While my account is funded, I still feel like I should be very cautious until my divorce is final. It’s really more than the divorce that’s holding me back. I think we are due for a correction of at least 5%, but …

End of the Year Summary – 2016

December was another strong month for me in a year that ended with a loss in my account. The way I traded TLT (without hedges) forced me to take losses when the market temporarily dipped even though my longer-term outlook was correct. The old Keynes adage fits in here (paraphrased) that the market can stay wrong longer than I can stay solvent. It’s moot that I was right in the end. What mattered is that I couldn’t stay long all my …

Options Expiration – December 2016

Today was the ex-dividend date for MDY and someone decided to assign my shares a day early so they could take advantage of the dividend. After closing at $104.69 yesterday, my one MDY December $290 covered call was assigned and I sold my 100 shares of MDY for $290.00 while I took a full profit ($579.75) on the call option.

I missed out on the $1.165 dividend, but was able to take the profit on the shares and the option in …
